Thank you to all the drop locations who facilitate the pillowcases getting to the kids

Welcome to our Chapter. We hope you will join us in helping children feel better to heal better.

In September, Ryan’s Case for Smiles traditionally celebrates Pediatric Cancer Awareness (🎗) month by collecting & sewing as many pillowcases as it can,  calling the effort “Miles of Pillowcases Smiles” (“MOPS”). Obviously, the pandemic has forced cancellations of most usual & fun rituals associated with this endeavor. But, Ryan’s Case for Smiles is very slow to be deterred.

The Boston Chapter, going forward, hopes that you will make & donate toward the miles & recruit friends, whether expert sewers or not, to join the charge.  We would like to help you by setting up a challenge:

  • Wednesday, September 9, sew, using your favorite method;
  • Friday, September 18 sew, using your serger; and,
  • Saturday, September 26 sew, using French seams.

Email your results to ( at end of day, or the next day. Although this year may be virtual, we’ll still stock our bins for our sick kids!!

Of course, we welcome sewing done any day, so don’t forget the other 27 sewing days in September.

Thank you, Marie & Barbara

❤️💜❤️ THANKS TO PAT CHRISTOUN, who once again donated over one thousand pillowcases to the sick kids in Boston hospitals. It seems almost unbelievable, but if you knew Pat, like we know Pat, you’d understand!!

Please make sure to have as many pins when throwing pillowcases into the washing machine, as you had when you began pinning the fabric.

on being part of the donation of 60,000 pillowcases to area pediatric hospital facilities. That’s no small achievement: thank you, thank you, thank you.

“Hello Boston Chapter of Ryan’s Case for Smiles and Pillowcase Angels,

Just a short note to express our gratitude to you all  for the recent donation of pillowcases for victims of the Camp Fire in Paradise, California.  The four generous boxes of pillowcases will be distributed at a shelter in Chico, CA within the next few days.  Pillowcases distributed last week were oh so very welcomed by everyone in the shelter.  There were big smiles on children’s faces as well as the adults.  The pillowcases were a bright spot in their day for sure.  We can’t thank you enough for your generosity, care and concern for the people of Paradise.  The nursing students from our local college have been volunteering in the shelters.  They distributed the pillowcases and brought smiles to many.

The  situation defies description other than to say that every aspect of the Paradise, CA  society as been wiped off the map or turned upside down in one way or another.  It most certainly is taking a country to help Butte County and Paradise get through this.  Your care, concern, and generosity all the way from Boston is very appreciated.

We wish you the very best of holiday seasons.   Your pillowcases will continue to brighten the days for children and families living in shelters.

Thank you,

Laura Roberts”

10 year old Samantha delivers 100, yes 100, pillowcases which she made, with her Nana, for our sick kids and to help with MOPS. Thank you so much, Sam.

The Richardson Middle School and Dracut High School students participated in a Pillowcase Palooza.  Check our more photos from the day here.
Check out this great article from Shriner’s Hospital that features our chapter. It is always so much fun to sew with the children and their families.

A note from a family:

“Hello, I’m not sure how in-depth to write, so will give basics. Lilly is 8 years old and has been struggling with an autoimmune disease since age 3. She was in remission for a few years and has relapsed over and over for past year in a half. We have tried everything, so many medications, treatments etc.. We have had to move, we have gone to two states looking for opinions etc. We have no ex-tended family, and are new to Boston, there have been so many changes. Lilly began chemotherapy the other day in Tufts floating hospital. She was so scared, as was I ( mom ) it was just us …Lilly asked if family would come or her old friends from back home in NH but it’s not an when she saw that someone actually thought of HER and made HER a pillow case of her very own especially one with paw prints!!! Dogs are her absolute favorite. She lit up like a Christmas tree!! We both had tears of joy. She will be coming back in for more treatments and now it doesn’t seem so bad!! Thank you so Much.”

The Boston Chapter has exceeded 60,000 pillowcases delivered to pediatric patients at some of the world’s best hospitals, located in and around Boston.

It is only through the kindness and thoughtfulness of you and others like you that we have been able to reach this milestone.  Know that you have made a difference and will, hopefully, continue to help us make a difference.

With heartfelt appreciation and gratitude,
